Medium Armor

Typically mail-crafted armor, such as chainmail, or splintmail. medium armor offers greater protection than the lighter armor classes, but at a cost. Medium armor is heavier, and less reactive than light leather or cloth armor, and creates considerably more noise when attempting to hide or sneak.

While a bit more restrictive and less compatible with stealth than the lighter armor classes, it's more robust defense against melee attacks make medium armor a preferred armor type amongst close combat melee classes.
